Driftpile Cree Nation (DCN) is a proud and culturally strong First Nation located between the towns of Slave Lake from the west, and High Prairie from the east, approximately 340 km northwest of Edmonton. The Nation is nestled on the south shore of Lesser Slave Lake. As the second-largest lake entirely within the Alberta boundaries Lesser Slave Lake is a stunning destination for birders and wildlife enthusiasts. We are signatory to Treaty 8 and a member of the Lesser Slave Lake Indian Council. As stewards of the land, we will ensure that the best sustainable practices are followed, now and in the future. As a dynamic and vibrant community, DCN strives to continue to develop with the support of our management, Chief and Council and from the contributions of our Nation members. We are dedicated to delivering services that continually improve the community through improvements in social programs and infrastructure projects.

OVERVIEW:

DRUM & SASH (D&S) is a large, community-led team grant to support First Nation and Métis communities in Alberta and other provinces to develop, test and assess the implementation of STBBI prevention and care model development for HIV, Hepatitis C, STBBIs and related issues such as mental health and addictions. There is a strong capacity-strengthening component built into the project that helps us grow as a team and learn from each other and from initiatives underway in other regions. This position is part-time, 20 hours per week – contract employment and capacity building opportunity.

D&S is a partnership between the Canadian Aboriginal AIDS Network (CAAN), Indigenous Services Canada, participating communities that include Sucker Creek First Nation, Driftpile Cree Nation, Tallcree First Nation, Stoney Nation, Blood Tribe and the Métis Nation of Alberta through Shining Mountains Living Community Services, people with lived experience, Elders, clinicians, researchers and service providers. The research is administered by the University of Victoria. The overall project guidance will come from the D&S National Coordinator.

The D&S Driftpile Community Coordinator will be responsible for:

  • Building and maintaining relationships within the community and wellness-related service on and off-reserve

  • Providing leadership in raising awareness around HIV, Hepatitis C, STBBI and related mental health and stigma

  • Developing community-specific, HIV, Hepatitis C, STBBI and related mental health and stigma resources

  • Supporting the implementation assessment and evaluation of D&S activities

  • Writing regular reports

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalency is required. A college or university degree is an asset but not required.

  • Applicants can have a combination of life experience and formal education

  • Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle an asset. A 3-year driver’s abstract will be required.

  • Clean CRC with Vulnerable sector check.

Skills:

  • Excellent written, organization and interpersonal skills

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite; Word, Excel, PowerPoint and email

  • Experience and/or knowledge of HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis C, STBBI research, prevention, care, treatment and support is an asset

  • Strong problem-solving skills

  • Knowledge of Cree Culture and the ability to speak Cree an asset

Abilities:

  • Ability to facilitate/co-facilitate community awareness-related events

  • Apply open-minded attitudes/respect toward individuals from varying walks of life

  • Good relationship building and conflict resolution skills

  • Demonstrated ability to work on a team and independently

  • Demonstrate an ability to learn and be self-directed

Working Conditions:

  • The D&S Driftpile Coordinator will work in an office environment in Driftpile unless otherwise directed.

  • Applicants must be ready, willing, and able to travel including evenings and weekends, as required.
